PPS' newest instrumentation product, the wireless FingerTPS (Finger Tactile Pressure Sensing) system, was
recently unveiled to the public at the 2008 IVR Industrial Virtual Reality Expo in Tokyo. FingerTPS sensors are soft,
flexible units worn on the hands which capture and transmit accurate, repeatable tactile force data to a PC via
wireless Bluetooth connection. FingerTPS tactile data with integrated video provides a complete representation
of user interaction with tools, sports equipment, new product designs, or medical applications.
Other PPS instrumentation systems include RoboTouch for providing a sense of touch to robot grippers,
TactArray for measuring distributed tactile pressures with a USB interface, ConTacts for tactile force
measurements with analog output, and PresStrip for linear pressure measurement.
PPS has been designing and developing the world's most advanced systems for measuring distributed tactile pressures since 1996. The Company's core technology was originally conceived at Harvard University and subsequently enhanced through government grants from the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, Army Research Laboratory, and National Institutes of Health.
PPS' instrumentation and OEM capabilities have helped customers achieve important improvements in product performance, optimize their manufacturing processes and create new products that capture the sense of touch in the fields of medicine, robotics, industrial and consumer product design, and manufacturing quality control.
PPS' core technology forms the basis of two successful medical device manufacturers: Medical Tactile, Inc. produces the SureTouch Pre-Mammogram system for the early detection of breast cancer, while Sierra Scientific Instruments is the industry leader in high-resolution motility (swallowing pressure) instrumentation for diagnosing gastrointestinal disorders. PPS has also partnered with eSoles, to develop the 3D TruCapture self-service foot imaging kiosk, combining tactile and 3d scan data for the production of custom insoles or component recommendation for semi-custom, modular insoles.
On January 1st, 2007, PPS formed the PPS Tactile (PPST) division to establish capacitive tactile sensing as an embedded technology for the personal mobile device, consumer electronics, and robotics markets. PPS Tactile partners with leading multinational telecommunications firms to develop advanced User Interface solutions, and offers mass production capabilities through manufacturing partners in Korea. Mobile phones featuring PPST technology are now available in select Asian markets, and PPST-powered portable media players will be available in the USA in the fall of 2008.
